NEW AUDIOBOOK REVIEW FROM DANA

Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook

By Christina Henry

Narrated by Samuel Roukin

From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook—a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is…

“Peter will say I’m a villain, that I wronged him, that I never was his friend. But I told you already. Peter lies. This is what really happened.”

I am completely blown away right now. I’ve never listened to (or read) such a fascinating and dark retelling before. Okay, I’m going to make a statement and just hear me out… this version of the folktale of Peter Pan and Captain Hook actually makes more sense than the story we all know. Peter is a petulant child and an evil narcissist. I wouldn’t just say this was a dark retelling, it was menacing. Peter is sick, cold, calculating, and manipulative. Extremely jealous and never remorseful. In the words of Captain Hook, “I hate Peter Pan.” Christina Henry has a wild, dark, unique, and crazily creative imagination. And I’m here for it all! I never would have pictured this particular fairy tale being so gruesome and violent. Or that I’d love every single minute of it. I’m legit about to go spend my audible credits and next paycheck on the rest of her retelling audiobooks! I don’t want to give too much of the story away. If you’re a fan of dark retellings, darker fiction stories, and/or horror, you absolutely MUST listen to (or read) this book!

“We all believe him, at first. Even me. That’s how he lures us here with his promises. And then he rips us to pieces.”

This story is a beautifully twisted and brutal retelling. It needed the perfect narrator that would capture the emotions of every crazy detail. In walks Samuel Roukin. He was cast perfectly for this story. The timing, pitch, pace, and flow were exemplary. His performance here is brilliant. Samuel really brought everything to life, making it even more enthralling. I highly recommend the audiobook version of this story versus reading it.
