Review from Dana

THE UPSIDE OF FALLING

Book 1 of 2 in the Blue Line duet

By Meghan Quinn

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC [in exchange for an honest review] of the audiobook boxset THE DUETS by Meghan Quinn. The boxset includes the Blue Line Duet and The Perfect Duet.  I was going to wait to do a review for when I finished the whole audio ARC, but I decided to do individual reviews on each book and then 1 full review for the Duets.

In The Upside of Falling, we meet Colby Brooks and Rory Oaks. Colby’s father dies when he’s only 10 years old. Colby looks up to his dad and gramps dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. Immediately after his dad’s death, his mom moves in her new boyfriend [and future husband] – his dad’s Doctor. The stepdad is physically and mentally abusive to Colby. The dad’s death [and subsequent abuse from step-dad] is the catalyst for Colby’s fight to achieve his goal. Fast forward to adulthood and Colby is now a trainee at the Air Force Academy, alongside his best friend Stryder.  Colby has no time for distractions. His only desire is to keep his eye on the prize, which is his flight career. At Stryder’s persistence, Colby attends a party. It’s there that he meets the beautiful and strong Rory, the distraction he didn’t want. Rory teaches exercise classes and is a massage therapist. Rory is fiercely loyal to those she loves and cares for. She’s funny, kind, tenacious, and supportive. Rory responds to Colby’s initial coldness with overwhelming kindness. Despite his belief that love will only distract him from his goals, Colby is drawn to Rory and can’t stay away from her.

Narrators Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell were perfectly cast to guide us through this journey of two people from different worlds finding each other, sharing their darkest secrets and fears, and falling in love. Joe’s voice was perfect for Colby’s young but dominating demeanor, and Maxine was perfect for Rory’s kind heart and tenacity. They help the story flow easily from one chapter to the next. The story in itself is great, but the narrators take that excellence to a higher level. Their emotional tones fit the plot, making it easy to connect to the characters. Thank you, Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell, for bringing this beautiful book to life.

I’m ending my review here because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. But this ending… omg y’all, this ending! Meghan Quinn has me completely gutted and emotional right now! Hashtag, Cliffhanger.  I’m so glad I have the full duet to ARC because I just cannot go forward in my life without the 2nd part to this duet. I legit almost had a panic attack. My 2020sucks-heightened anxiety levels could barely handle the last part of this book. Oh, and the steam level—off the charts!!!

Buckle up tight, because this flight is thrilling and bumpy, to say the least!

5 turbulEnt-flight stars!
