At just over an hour, this was a short but great listen. This full cast narration was more of a production/screenplay versus a normal audiobook. Each character was distinctly voiced by a different actor. It was more like a play, complete with sound effects. This is only the second audiobook I’ve listened to like this and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrators did a perfect job at executing the characters and bringing the story to life. Each narrator delivered an energetic performance to make you feel connected to their character.
Skylar, a stylist from California, decides to not date for 1 year. She celebrates her “single-versary” by taking a solo trip to Maui Hawaii for some adventure after her cousin’s wedding. Skylar wants a “man-batical”, which she describes as a dating cleanse. She wants to try new things out of her comfort zone so she signs up for excursions with an adventure tour guide. On her first day of adventure, the very sexy tour guide Caleb takes Skylar snorkeling. Caleb, a guy who lives by the rules, loves her idea of blackballing dating and says he’s on a dating boycott list as well. He feels like relationships should take time and see how things develop. As the days and adventures continue, Caleb and Skylar gain a mutual respect and like for each other. As it turns out, Caleb may be Skylar’s most exciting adventure yet.
This was such a sweet and fun listen with great characters and an appealing storyline. That being said, I’m only giving it 3.5 stars instead of 5 because of the length. Despite the quick listen, it was clear that Lauren Blakely created a well-developed story line and characters. I feel like this short story had more than enough potential to be a full-length novel. I appreciate short listens, but I feel like this was a missed opportunity for the author. I would encourage Blakely to release a longer version of this book. The characters and story have so much potential for a 5-star romantic comedy. I loved it so much that I’m dying for more!
