Read with the lights on…

The Good House by Tananarive Due

tgh

The Good House is one of those books that will stick with you forever. It was very intense and intriguing. It taught me a few things about a culture that I didn’t understand. Tananarive Due replayed scenes from different perspectives and only revealed pertinent information at the right/best moments. Her story telling made it so you couldn’t put the book down! The characters were so well developed and powerful.  I love how strong and resourceful Angela Toussaint is. The Toussaints family home has a horror story that spans generations. The Toussaints have a history of voodoo and mystery that makes this story even more intriguing.  But never forget that the house is a major character in this book as well.  The ending was kind of like cheating… but I was very happy with it. I think it ended the way it needed to. Though it’s a creepy and chilling horror novel, The Good House is also about grief, loss, marriage, and heritage. Shout out to Robin Miles, the narrator for the audiobook. She did an excellent job!

“…this house was built in 1907 by the town pharmacist, Elijah Goode. He chose this place because he said the land felt ‘blessed beyond all description,’ or in any case that’s what he wrote to his brother in Boston.”

Synopsis:

Working to rebuild her law practice after her son commits suicide, Angela Toussaint journeys to the family home where the suicide took place, hoping for answers, and discovers an invisible, evil force that is driving locals to acts of violence.

“I’m in the film business, remember — and if this were a movie, this is the part where the audience would be screaming for the woman to get out of the house. So that’s exactly what I’m doing.”

5 creepy-supernatural-suspense stars!
